Montreal, September 4, 2016 – Montrealer Louis Krieber-Gagnon is bringing home a silver medal from the Asian Open in Taipei, Taiwan this Sunday.

After receiving a bye from the Under 90 kg opening round, Krieber-Gagnon eliminated Taiwan’s Hsieh Che-wei with an ippon. In the semi-finals, he also beat South Korean Kim Chan-ho, this time by a penalty.

The 20-year-old’s day however took a turn for the worse in the fight for the gold, when Krieber-Gagnon was served an ippon by Kim Kyung-mo, from South Korea, and walked away with the silver medal.

On Saturday, Gueorgui Poklitar (Under 66 kg) didn’t perform as he expected, ending the day with two losses on his record. After a bye from the opening round, he was up against Taiwan’s Huang Sheng-ting, who got Poklitar to take two penalties to win the match.

In repechage, South Korean Kim Whi-geon threw Poklitar for an ippon, and the Canadian finished the competition in seventh place.

Also competing in the Under 60 kg was Darren Elcock, who failed to place. The Alberta athlete lost his first and only fight of the day by ippon to Taiwanese Yang Chun-ting.
