Zupancic in action

Montréal, February 18, 2018 – As the only Canadian athlete competing today at the European Open in Rome, in Italy, Kelita Zupancic made her way to the final, where she lost against British Katiejemima Yeatsbrown to bring home the silver medal.

She started her day by winning both her two fights in the preliminary rounds by ippon, against French Lucie Perrot and Italian Carola Paissoni.

The judoka from Ontario won the semi-final fight against Danish Emilie Sook, once again by ippon.

During the final, the British athlete defeated Zupancic by ippon.

“It’s been 6 months since I’ve competed so it was good to get some matches today to get ready for Germany next weekend. Constantly winning medals is always the goal, so I was just happy to be back on the podium today,” said Zupancic.

“This was the first competition for Kelita since the world championships last September. The goal for today was for her to try and get as many matches as possible. She went 3-1 today ending up with a 2nd place finish, easily cruising to the final. This is a great start to her European tour,” commented her coach, Sasha Mehmedovic.
