Canadian athletes at the Judo Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, performed well despite being a small team.

Saturday, during the Cadet tournament, 2 canadian judokas stood on the highest step of the podium: Keagan Young (-73 kg) and Alexandre Arencibia (-81 kg).

James Millar, national team coach, was very pleased with their performances: “All of the team performed well today. Some small mistakes were made, but overall, the results were close to what I expected. Both Alexandre and Keagan showed their class in their respective categories, controlling opponents well and finishing opportunities decisively.”

The sole feminine Canadian representative of the event, Rachel Krapman (-57 kg) ended with a silver medal, losing against Colombian Nikol Pencue, ranked 6th in the world.

“Rachel has shown steady improvement and is building on her recent performances in Europe. It was a good outing for her,” added Millar. “It was a great opportunity for all three to climb the world ranking and improve their seeding for the next few Cadet Cup events and the Pan American Championships in July. ”

Antic in Fifth Place

The only judoka from Canada in action on Sunday, Sava Antic (-73 kg), ended in 5th place. “He was given undeserved shidos during the bronze medal bout against an athlete from Dominican Republic. It’s not the result we were hoping for, it’s disappointing,” explained Millar.
