Montréal, September 28, 2014 (Sportcom) – The Quebecoise judoka Alix Renaud-Roy was the only Canadian to climb onto the podium this weekend, claiming a bronze medal in the under 70 kg category at the European Open in Tallinn, Estonia.

Renaud-Roy won her first bout against the Russian Alena Prokopenko. After succumbing to defeat in the semifinals to the Italian Giulia Cantoni, she bounced back in the battle for 3rd place, taking down the Israeli Yarden Mayersohn.

“My day went fairly well. In the semifinals, I was leading by a shido until the last second when my opponent scored a yuko for the win. She was trying to push me to the outside of the mat to force me into a shido, so at that moment I decided to attack, and that’s where she countered me,” Renaud-Roy explained.

“In the bronze medal bout, I threw the Israeli to ground for a yuko, and from that point on I controlled the match.  I was happy with the medal, because it meant finishing the day on a high note. I was aiming for a podium finish today,” She added.

The Quebecer Zachary Burt (-81 kg) lost his one and only bout of the day, falling to the Azerbaijani Tural Safguliyev.

“I felt good during the fight, but I wasn’t able to score a point against my opponent. I was also a handed a few dubious penalties. Both my trainer and I thought that I didn’t deserve them,” Burt commented.

In the +100 kg class, Ontarian Martin Rygielski was also eliminated in his first bout, falling to the Russian Stepan Sarkisyan.
