Montreal, July 15, 2018 – Quebecoise Alix Renaud-Roy had the best Canadian result at the Judo European Cup in Saarbrücken, in Germany, with a silver medal in the -70 kg category. During the final, Renaud-Roy was defeated by German Giovanna Scoccimarro.

“I’m still pretty happy, I had good fights. I made a mistake in the final fight, and I shouldn’t have left my guard down,” explained Renaud-Roy. “I got caught on the ground, and she scored an ippon, even though I was out of the mat. With the way I fell, I didn’t think my opponent had scored, but that’s only my opinion.”

Fighting against another German judoka, Jenny Werner, in the semi-final, the athlete from La Pocatière won by ippon. Alina Lengweiler (Switzerland) and Liane Heinz (Germany) were also defeated by Renaud-Roy on Sunday.

“Obviously, I would have liked to stand on the highest step of the podium, but this result gives me a second criterion for my Sport Canada carding. I’m only missing one now. A victory on Sunday would have taken a lot of pressure off my shoulders, but it was still a good day. I’ve improved during this last year, and today’s result show me that my efforts are rewarded and that I’m still improving.”

Mina Coulombe ended the day with a 0-2 record in -78 kg.

On the men’s side, Ontarian Mohab El Nahas (-90 kg) had the best result with a 9th place. He had two victories and two losses after being eliminated in repechage.

Alex Marineau (-81 kg) was also eliminated in repechage after being defeated by French Jonathan Allardon, who went on to win the bronze medal. The Montrealer ended the day with one victory and two losses.

Marc Deschênes (+100 kg), from Laval, also had a record of 1-2. Gabriel Juteau, from Boucherville, lost his first and only fight in the -66 kg category.
