Montreal, December 16, 2018 – Canadian Kelita Zupancic was eliminated by the athlete who ended up winning the bronze medal in the -70 category at the World Judo Masters on Sunday, in Guangzhou.

Netherlander Sanne Van Dijke, ranked 5th in the world, eliminated the Ontarian, ranked 10th, by waza-ari during her first bout.

“Unfortunately, it was a short day today. Kelita got scored on halfway through the match and just couldn’t manage to catch up,” said the assistant national coach, Sasha Mehmedovic.

Despite her loss today, Mehmedovic believes her protégée is having a good season so far. “She’s on the right track for Tokyo 2020. I believe Kelita needs a well-deserved break so she can start off the new year strong,” he concluded.

Japanese Saki Niizoe (gold), Columbian Yuri Alvear (silver), and Austrian Michaela Polleres (bronze) completed the podium.
