Montréal, October 30th, 2011 – A few young, Canadian judokas were on display, Sunday, at the Senior European Cup taking place in Boras, Sweden.  Only Albertan native Jordan Poliakiwski, fighting in the under 52 kg class, was able to come away with a win.

Her sole victory came against the Russian Luiza Kharchenko.  5th seed in her category, Poliakiwski was able to make quick work of her opponent, defeating her with an ippon.

In her next bout, she would come up short against the 9th ranked Belgian Lotte Denoo, who would later go on to compete in the final.

In the L bracket, Poliakiwski took two penalties against the Norwegian Katrine Hofstad, who took full advantage of these miscues to win the duel and put an end to the Canadian’s day.

“I was very satisfied with my first bout, not as much with my second. In the redraft, my fouls gave the win to my opponent. Despite the loss, I was still able to identify certain things I can work on that will help me improve my overall performance. I’m going to work hard on these fine points so I can come back stronger for the next competition,” Poliakiwski indicated.

In the under 70 kg division, the Quebecer Sarah-Myriam Mazouz, competing in her very first international competition in Europe, finished in 9th place.

After benefitting from a bye into the second round, she fell by way of an ippon to the competition’s 6th seed, the German Laura Vargas-Koch.

In the L bracket, Mazouz would go on to lose to the No. 2 seed, Dutchwoman Linda Bolder, also by ippon.

Both of these opponents would later go home with a bronze medal apiece.

On the men’s side, Alister Ward lost his first fight in the under 66 kg class, falling at the hands of the No. 8 seed, Swede Michel Dahlin, who beat the Canadian with an ippon.

“These are three young judokas that have come here to Sweden and gained a ton of international experience. Besides the results, they showed a lot of good things today (Sunday).  These are serious athletes who all have the potential to succeed. It should also be pointed out that for a B level competition, the skill level was pretty high.  Some divisions were extremely tough,” coach Jean-François Marceau pointed out.

The three judokas will be back in action at the Finnish Open next week, as they will try to build off of this latest experience.
