29 December 2020Montréal, July 12, 2014 (Sportcom) – Canadian judoka Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard will leave Russia with a gold medal around her neck after another stellar performance in the under 57 kg category. She duplicated last week’s gold medal showing with another perfect outing, Saturday, this time at the Grand Slam tourney presented in Tyumen, Russia.
The Quebecoise athlete got her day started with wins over the Dutchwoman Carla Grol and the Chinese Lien Chen-Ling. In the semifinals she got the better of the Australian Sabrina Filzmoser before dominating the American Marti Malloy in the final.
Antoine Valois-Fortier rejoiced in his teammate’s triumph. “She won gold, it’s a huge accomplishment! She will definitely be one of the judokas to watch at the upcoming World Championships in August. A win like that, it really motivates the troops!”
Beauchemin-Pinard picked up a gold medal last week at the Ulan Bator Grand Prix.
Malloy, who came away with the silver medal, eliminated the other Canadian in action in the under 57 kg class, beating Stéphanie Tremblay in the second match of the prelims. Tremblay would eventually settle for a 9th place classification after winning her first bout against the Bulgarian Ivelina Ilieva.
In the under 73 kg division, Etienne Briand also garnered 9th place finish with a win-loss record of 1-1. He won his first bout against the Serbian Ljubisa Kovacevic before falling to the Brazilian Marcelo Contini.
As for Patrick Gagné (-66 kg), he lost his one and only match of the day. He succumbed to defeat versus the Russian Anzaur Ardanov, who went on to claim the bronze medal.
The Grand Slam continues on Sunday with Catherine Roberge, Kyle Reyes and Antoine Valois-Fortier all in action for Team Canada.
