29 December 2020Montreal, February 1rst, 2015 (Sportcom) – Jessica Klimkait, who won the gold medal on Saturday in the under 57 kg junior category, won once again on Sunday, this time in the senior category, during the Arlon Open in Belgium.
The Ontarian judoka won her two bouts in the prelims, then won again against the French Amelie Guihur and Treicy Etiennar, and the British Theresa Stoll. In the finale, she defeated Aurella Issoumaila, also from France.
Kimklait ended the weekend with a second gold medal and a total of 13 winning bouts. The 18-year-old became one of the youngest athletes to dominate the Arlon Open in the senior category. The youngest is still the Japanese Haruka Tachimoto, who won in 2007, when she was 17 years old.
Alix Remaud-Roy (-70 kg) finished third in her category with 6 victories and 1 defeat. During the elimination round, the Quebecoise won against the French Juliette Tarting and Habiba Molene, as well as the Luxembourger Lynn Mossong. Her only defeat was against the French Audrey Felis.
“I’m really disappointed with the semi-final,” said Renaud-Roy. “I was good enough to win but I didn’t have much time to recover after the quarterfinal bout, which was very long, and I didn’t have enough energy.”
Erin Morgan (-48 kg), from Alberta, and Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi (-78 kg), from Quebec, were defeated on their first bout in the elimination round. Audrée Francis Méthot (-52 kg), also from Quebec, and Jaquina Simao (-63 kg), from Alberta, were both eliminated in the prelims.
The format for this competition was unusual. Judokas aren’t used to have prelims. Competitions usually start right to the elimination round.
Memorable day for Burt
Zachary Burt (-81 kg) won one of the two bronze medals in his category, on Sunday, during the Vise Open, also in Belgium. The athlete from Oshawa won the finale for one of the two bronze medals against the German David Riedl, a good opponent for him.
“I’m very happy! It was the best day of my career. I had real fights and I was against experimented judokas” said Burt.
“My opponent for the bronze finale was very hard to fight with because his style is very unusual. I had to be very careful during a few positions. We had a plan with my coach and it worked out perfectly” he added.
Also in the under 81 kg category, Louis Krieber-Gagnon, from Montreal, finished 7th. He fought 6 bouts, finishing with 4 victories and 2 defeats.
“I’m happy with my victories and for going far. However, I’m disappointed with my last defeat because I think I could have done better and reach the bronze finale. I have to work on my physical fitness to be better at the end of my bouts” daid Krieber-Gagnon.
