Points are awarded for being active in judo in the technical stream. An active year is defined as practicing a minimum of 120 hours on the mat during a twelve-month period from the date of the last promotion as recorded in the records maintained by the provincial/territorial and Judo Canada offices. Twenty-five (25) points can be claimed for each fully completed year. Please note as of 2025 07 01, in order to be eligible for grading, candidates will be required to have at least 50% of their claimed points from technical activities. See section 5.0 of the 2025 Syllabus.

Both Mudansha and Yudansha must be members of both the Provincial/Territorial Association and of Judo Canada.

Competitions

Shiai, Veterans and Ne-waza

There are no tournaments.

Results obtained at sanctioned point tournaments and events will be counted with the following conditions:

- Shiais must be at the level of U18 or older; and 30 years or older for Veterans and Ne-waza events.
All domestic and international shiais and events must be sanctioned provincially, nationally or internationally (IJF and other).
- All technical stream competition points must be validated by the PGC/TGC.
- Shiai participants may claim 5 participation points per tournament; Veterans and Ne-waza participants must be 30 years of age to claim 5 participation points per event.
- Victories by Fusen-gachi do not count for points.
- IPPON (10 Points)
- WAZA-ARI (7 Points)
- YUKO (5 Points)

Exceptions:

- For Shodan candidates (Ikkyu), a win over Nikyu counts for grading.
- Wins in all sanctioned In international tournaments will count 10 points per victory.

Kata Tournaments

At least one nationally-certified member of the Provincial/Territorial Grading Committee or an approved examination jury member must be present at domestic kata tournaments as a judge to be able to claim grading points.

For each sanctioned domestic and international kata tournament, a candidate may accumulate two (2) grading points per team below the candidate’s team ranking at the event and three (3) grading points per team below at the World Kata championships. In addition, candidates may claim 5 grading points per tournament for participation if more than one team participates in the relevant kata.

Candidates may claim grading points for teaching/instructing a minimum of 120 hours per year based on their NCCP certification levels as follows:

Volunteering

Executive or Committee volunteering: To collect points, candidate must be a member of a formal executive or committee for a period of 12 months:

Course/Clinic Conductor

Grading points may be earned on a per event basis by course/clinic conductors (and their Uke if the same Uke is used for the entire duration of the course/clinic) for conducting provincial/territorial or nationally organized professional development, Kata, referee and technical clinics, NCCP courses, and nationally-approved team training camps. These events must be sanctioned at the appropriate level:
