Priscilla Gagné earns bronze in Brazil
12 July 2026Judo Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of David Flecha Díez as National NextGen Coach. With extensive international experience as an athlete, coach, and strength and conditioning specialist, David will bring valuable expertise to the development of Canada’s next generation of athletes and to supporting judokas as they transition toward the senior high-performance level.
Originally from Spain, David Flecha first built a strong career as a high-level judoka. A medallist on the Spanish national scene and active on the international circuit, he notably won a bronze medal at the Malaga European Cup in 2012. His experience as an athlete now allows him to fully understand the technical, physical, and mental demands required to perform at the highest level.
In recent years, David has built a respected coaching career within several international development systems. From 2022 to 2025, he worked with the Swiss Judo Federation and RLZ Bern, where he supported talented and junior athletes while also taking on responsibilities related to strength and conditioning. He also served as a support coach for Alberto Gaitero during the Olympic cycle leading to the Paris 2024 Games, including at International Judo Federation circuit events.
His experience also includes important roles in South America, notably in Colombia, where he worked with development and elite athletes, as well as with the Peruvian Judo Federation, where he contributed to the coaching of the national junior and senior teams. Through these experiences, David has developed a comprehensive approach to athlete development, combining performance planning, strength and conditioning, individualized support, and a strong understanding of the realities of international pathways.

His arrival reflects Judo Canada’s commitment to strengthening the support provided to NextGen athletes, a pivotal stage in their progression toward the senior national team and major international competitions. Thanks to his technical background, multicultural experience, and athlete-centred coaching approach, David will help support Canadian judokas during a decisive period in their development.
“I am very happy to join Judo Canada and to contribute to the development of NextGen athletes. This category represents a key moment in a judoka’s career: athletes already have a strong foundation, but they must learn to take the final steps toward the international senior level. My goal will be to support them with rigour, commitment, and confidence throughout this process,” said David Flecha Díez.
Judo Canada welcomes David Flecha Díez and looks forward to seeing him contribute to the progression of the next generation of Canadian judokas.
