A Last Round of Applause for Calgary’s LOC
29 December 2020Three Canadians Crowned Pan American Champions
29 December 2020Montreal, June 2, 2018 – Canadian judoka’s day was cut short on Saturday in both the European Open in Madrid and the Junior European Cup in Leibnitz.
Fighting in the -73 kg category in the Spanish capital, Bradley Langlois was eliminated after two bouts. The Ontarian won against Belgian Denis Caro Lognoul Brasseur before being defeated by ippon against Italian Leonardo Casaglia.
Fighting in the same category, Warren Sieb, from Saskatchewan, was out after the first round, in which Russian Naib Umarov won by ippon.
On Sunday, Alix Renaud-Roy (-70 kg), Mina Coulombe (-78 kg), and Alex Marineau (-81 kg) will be on the tatamis in Spain.
First Round Eliminations at the Junior European Cup
“It was a disappointing start for all three athletes today. Some lapses of concentration cost them winnable matches, ending their day with first round losses,” said Canadian coach James Millar.
At the Junior European Cup in Leibnitz (Austria), Ontarians Allayah Copeland (-78 kg), Christian Dametto (-66 kg), and Sava Antic (-73 kg) were all eliminated after their first bout.
Copeland was eliminated in the first round, when Croatian Karla Prodan took the lead with a waza-ari.
“Allayah Copeland came into the tournament as 7th seed but didn’t really get a chance to get started. She conceded wazari early and was overwhelmed by her opponents kumikata, finding it difficult to build her attacks throughout the match,” comment Millar.
For his part, Dametto held on for 3 minutes and 23 seconds before conceding victory to German Till Riehl.
“Christian Dametto started well and looked comfortable in the exchanges, but conceded a score early in the match. He started to push forward looking for opportunities, but his opponent did enough to stay in front and threw him for ippon in the last 30 seconds,” explained Millar.
In the -73 kg category, Italian Andrea Spicuglia won by waza-ari against Antic.
“Sava Antic started well but conceded an early score. He pressed his opponent till the end, but the Italian fought a tactical match, and Sava could not break him down enough to win the match.”
Luka Khatelishvili (-81 kg) and Benjamin Kendrick (-90 kg) will be in action on Sunday.
