Montreal, March 10, 2019 – Judoka Shady El Nahas barely missed the podium on Sunday at the Marrakech Grand Prix, in Morocco. The Torontonian was eliminated in repechage and ended in 7th place.

Fighting in the -100 kg category, El Nahas saw his pathway to the podium come to an end when Uzbek Mukhammadkarim defeated him in the first round of repechage.

Earlier in the day, the resident of Montreal received a bye through the first round before eliminating Moroccan Youssef Elhamdani and German Domenik Schoenefeldt. He was defeated for the first time in quarterfinals by Australian Kayhan Ozcicek-Takagi.

In -90 kg, Zachary Burt was eliminated in the third round. Burt, who also received a bye through the first round, defeated Moroccan Elhoucine Chakiri before being eliminated by ippon by French Aurélien Diesse. Louis Krieber-Gagnon was eliminated after his first fight.

“Today was less of a success,” commented the national team coach Michel Almeida, who pointed out the athletes had trouble adjusting to the refereeing style. “The referees were very severe in defensive positions. Assuming that it was intentional and that it’ll stay that way, some of our athletes will have to adjust their style quickly.”

In Lima, in Peru, Mohab El Nahas (-90 kg) and Michael Guerault (-100 kg) didn’t get to experience a win and were both ranked in 7th place in their respective categories.

In the preliminary round, El Nahas was defeated by ippon by Argentinian Tomas Spikermann before being eliminated in repechage by Raphael Schwendinger, from Liechtenstein, who also scored an ippon.
