Teaching Judo: In Search of the Right Balance

Rookie Carla Van Zyl Leads Canada with Seventh Place
6 October 2025On October 1, we celebrate the birthday of Roshi, our raccoon judoka from Canada’s Atlantic provinces. Curious, motivated, always the first on the tatami and the last to leave, Roshi dreams of opening his own judo club one day to share his passion. Officially welcomed into the Judo Canada family in 2022 alongside Ma-Scott, Roshi quickly became a favourite companion for young judoka and a symbol of teamwork and perseverance. A project growing with the community
Over the past two years, clubs, coaches, and young judoka have asked for more playful mascot tools to energize practices, decorate dojos, and build a stronger sense of belonging. This Roshi’s Day marks a new milestone: the launch of a collection of wallpapers in multiple formats for phones, computers, and social media—ready for use in clubs, at home, or at school.
A student collaboration that makes judo shine
To bring this collection to life, we had the pleasure of collaborating with Dali Gosselin—a talented student and illustrator ( Instagram : dali.gosselin ).
Dali immersed herself in Roshi’s world: his personality, dreams, quiet humour, and positive energy. She captured what resonates with kids—clean, expressive, memorable lines—while staying true to Judo Canada’s visual identity. Her work stands out for:
- A cohesive art direction: Roshi in judogi, smiling and welcoming, in an accessible, warm style.
- Thoughtful, useful production: variations tailored to real club needs (digital signage, kids’ phones, social banners, etc.).
- An educational touch: each visual reinforces the values of sharing, effort, and helping others that are central to judo.
We want to highlight Dali’s talent and professionalism, her ability to listen to club needs, and her attention to technical details (formats, framing, readability). Thank you, Dali, for turning this idea into practical tools for the whole community!
